Students told to develop practical skills

VIZIANAGARAM: Students of the Department of Chemistry in Maharajah’s Post-graduate College here have been asked to develop practical knowledge as that only would put the nation on progressive path.

B. Satyanarayana, Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University, who inaugurated the national seminar on “Recent developments and applications of chromatographic techniques” on the college premises on Sunday, stressed need to develop science further. He said that a mere 11.6 per cent of students were going for higher education and the success rate in research was only one per cent when compared with other nations across the globe. Asking students to use seminars for betterment, Prof. Satyanarayana detailed the utility of chromatographic techniques in pharmaceutical industry.

P. Jayaprakash Rao, Vice-Chairman of A.P. State Council of Higher Education, said that the nation remained backward due to lack of practical knowledge and appealed to students to improve learning skills. On chromatographic techniques, he said that “it is a nerve centre of chemistry and it is useful in bio-sciences, pharmaceutical and recombinant techniques. It is more helpful in the growing technology revolution. There is need to strengthen sciences as it is the basis for all round technology development.” He said that the seminar would help students interact with experts from outside.

Y.L.N. Murty, Head, School of Chemistry, Andhra University, explained the recent developments taking place in the applications of chromatography. All pharma companies use the techniques now for quality control and quality assurance. K. Hanumantha Rao, Director, B. Srirama Murty, Head of Chemistry Department, and A. Raghava Rao, correspondent of the college, spoke.
