Cyber cafes at railway stations face closure
NEW DELHI: All 24 cyber cafes at major railway stations across the country are being closed down after failing to earn expected proceeds, a development that might hamper the Railways' attempt to woo private firms for infrastructure projects.
Railways had decided to set up 82 cyber cafes on railway premises across the country in 2006 on the franchisee model on the basis of revenue sharing. By 2007, 24 cyber cafes came up at major stations including New Delhi, Mumbai Central, Howrah, Hyderabad, Secundrabad, Bangalore and Lucknow.
After functioning for about two years, all these cafes are being closed down though the operators had a five-year contract with the railways, said a senior official of RailTel, a subsidiary of Indian Railways.
The business at cyber cafes was not upto the expectation and had to be shut down, said the official.
