Helicopter on pitch grounds day’s play

Colombo, Feb. 21: Much to the shock of players participating in a senior level cricket match, a helicopter carrying an influential former minister landed bang in the playing area and disrupted a whole day’s match in Kandy.

The second day’s play of a crucial inter-school under-19 cricket match between St Sylvester’s College and Kalutara Vidyalaya came to a standstill due to the landing on Saturday.

This is because the Police Ground in Kandy, where the match was to be played, became a temporary aerodrome of a politician, The Sunday Island newspaper reported.

Not a ball could be bowled as a helicopter suddenly landed on the ground at around 8.30 am. It occupied the ground for almost eight hours making play completely impossible, the daily said quoting the informed sources. The newspaper quoted sources as saying that the helicopter had been occupying the playground throughout the day leaving the scheduled match there in total disarray. When contacted, school officials said teams had waited the whole day, all in vain, anticipating the helicopter would take off at any time leaving the ground open for them to start the match.

“We were hoping to start the match no sooner the obstacle (helicopter) was removed,” the newspaper quoted an official. This was in fact not the first time that a cricket match at the Police Ground in Kandy was interrupted due to a similar circumstance, which the teams unfortunately had no control of. A match between a Kandy school and a team from Colombo earlier this season was interrupted in the same fashion when some relatives of a top politician landed their helicopters at the venue putting the game in jeopardy, the report said.

On another occasion, the ground officials had to request participating schools, during a match played between DS Senanayake College, Colombo and St Sylvester’s College, Kandy to finish the second day’s proceedings before 2.00 pm because of another mpending “helicopter disturbance”, the report said.

CLINICAL RESEARCH IS IN INDIA

By 2010-11, the country will require the services of 50,000 clinical research professionals. The scope is immense

Clinical Research is one of the best things to have happened to Indian science graduates. Any medical graduate or a graduate with life sciences or pharmacology who is armed with a diploma from a good clinical research institute has the potential to join the field and earn much more than his counterparts from other industries. A Clinical Researcher’s job entails the effect of drugs on human beings. There are several stages in clinical research, the purpose of which is to prioritise the safety of drugs. In the first phase, the testing is done on healthy human beings. In the second and third phases, the efficacy of the new drug is tested as compared to other drugs or placebos. After all these studies are conducted, a drug may be given an authorisation. However, the research does not stop here. Trials and post-marketing surveillance continue. These are done to highlight the rare side effects that the drug may have on some.
According to a recent McKinsey study, Indian institutes at present train about 1,000 clinical research professionals every year. “By 2010-11, the country will require the services of 50,000 professionals. Global pharmaceutical majors will spend around US$ 1.6 billion for drug trials across the world in coming four years. At present, pharmaceutical companies invest about US$ 300 million. The potential is therefore, immense,” says Dr. S. K. Gupta, Director and Dean, Institute of Clinical Research (India).
So, if you are planning on taking up the profession, the ability to work in a team is important as you will have to interact daily with clinical personnel based elsewhere in India and abroad. You must also be a skilled negotiator.
Undergraduate and postgraduate degree holders in life sciences, including nursing, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology or pharmacy, are eligible for entry-level positions in clinical research. Courses in various institutes range from six months to one year. The Institute of Clinical Research, for instance, conducts a one-year and a two-year M.Sc in Clinical Research, PG Diploma in Advanced Clinical Research and M.Sc in Clinical Research Management. Mumbai-based Clinical Research Educa-tion and Management Academy (CREMA), with branches in Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, runs a full-time course, Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Research and three part-time PG diplomas in Pharmacovigilance, Clinical Data Management and Clinical Research. “Besides enriched modules of clinical research, we have focused on management and soft skills in these courses to make students perform better in corporate set-ups,” says Dr. S.M. Sapatnekar, Dean, CREMA.
India is fast emerging as an attractive destination for global clinical trials. This is because of the availability of a vast pool of patients and also well-trained medical professionals. The fact that the entire documentation of medicine in India is in English, is an added attraction.
A clinical research fresher is usually inducted as a Research Executive, during which his salary ranges between Rs. 2.5 and 4 lakh per annum. After that he becomes a Clinical Research Advisor. At this time, his salary ranges between Rs. 6 and 9 lakh per annum. A Project Manager earns Rs. 15 to 18 lakh annually while a Group Project Manager’s earnings are between Rs. 35 to 50 lakh per annum. At the top of the hierarchy is the Operations Director who earns in the range of Rs. 60 to 80 lakh per annum. With lucrative earning prospects, clinical research is an exciting career option. Any takers?

With the Board exams looming large, most students are burning the midnight oil. Stress, fatigue, blood pressure and sundry other problems that are part of student life come to the fore at this time and therefore, in a bid to make life a little easy for the student fraternity, the CBSE has begun its first phase of counseling which will continue till April 8.
“The CBSE outreach programme is carefully designed keeping the heterogeneity of the student population and geographical spread in mind,’’ said Rama Sharma, Public Relations Officer, CBSE.
There are a myriad ways in which you can get counselling if you are a student in need. For instance, CBSE telephone counselling is carried out by trained counsellors and around 52 principals from within CBSE affiliated schools in and outside India. Psychologists and social scientists will also be available on the helpline which will operate from 8 am to midnight from Delhi, Noida, Chandigarh, Meerut, Jaipur, Faridabad, Bhubaneswar, Vishakhapatnam, Jamnagar, Jabalpur, Coimbatore, Bhopal, Nagpur, Bengaluru, Guwahati, Kerala, Ludhiana, Kanpur, Bhilai and Pune across India. There will also be three helpline centres outside India in Kuwait, Dubai and Doha.
Specially-abled kids will also be able to avail of this facility. This year the CBSE has set up a centralised call system for better accessibility and convenience. Students can call the following numbers and get in touch with counsellors for one-on-one telephonic advice — 011-22236110, 011-22236111, 011-22236112, 011-22236113.
“You could also log on to the CBSE website and interact with the Chairman on exam-related issues and the Director (Academic) and Controller of Examinations, CBSE can also be contacted for online counselling,’’ says Sharma.
There are of course other websites and helplines that students can visit. Snehi, a Delhi-based NGO, also runs a pre-exam helpline, Disha, which students may call anytime between 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm every day except Sundays.
Then there is the CBSE website that gives plenty of information related to the exams and last but not least the CBSE has tie-ups with national newspapers like this one for weekly question and answer columns throughout the month of February.
A new online helpline called tomorrow4u.com by Sharda University aims to remove the examination blues of Board students and engineering, medical and MBA aspirants.
So, even though preparing for the exams may be a time of stress and strain at least you know that there is someone out there who is ready to listen and guide you along the way. Good luck!

Yoga poses for all joints, pelvic area

Yoga poses for all joints, pelvic area

Supta Vajrasana (Sleeping Thunderbolt Pose)

Sit on your heels like in Vajrasana and move your heels outwards next to your buttocks on both sides. As you exhale, slowly lean with the support of your hands and then your elbows until you lie down on your back with your spine slightly arched.
Bring your arms over your head and hold on to your opposite elbows. Close your eyes and be as relaxed and as comfortable as possible. Stay in this position for about 10 long and deep breaths.
To release, return to the starting position in the reverse order as you assumed the final position.

Balasana (Child Pose)
Hold on to both heels. As you inhale, lengthen your spine. As you exhale, round your spine and fold forward while you bring your chin to your chest and forehead towards your knees. Relax your entire body just like how a child relaxes. As you inhale, return to the starting pose. This is one set. Do two sets.

Benefits: This posture reduces stiffness in the shoulders, increases hip flexibility and tones and massages the abdominal organs. At the same time, it also relieves stiffness in the joints and opens the chest.
Note: Do not perform this pose if you have severe back pain.

English likely to make CLT20 cut

London, Feb. 21: A clash of dates with their domestic season had almost ruled out English teams’ participation in the Champions League but with the BCCI and the ECB in talks to break the deadlock, their chances of competing in the Twenty20 event have once again brightened up.

League’s commissioner Lalit Modi, however, remains adamant that the dates for the event would not change from the planned September 10 to 26, a schedule that coincides with England’s domestic season finale.

According to Cricinfo, BCCI secretary N. Srinivasan, who is also a member of the CLT20 governing council, is negotiating with the ECB on the issue.

Sussex and Somerset took part in the inaugural Champions League last year in India. Though the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has missed the deadline to accept the invitation for the upcoming edition, its domestic teams could still make the final list of participants to be announced after CLT20’s governing council meeting in March.

Hobart, Feb. 21: Australia continued their hold over West Indies with a 38-run win in the first Twenty20 international in Hobart. Having won the one-day series 4-0, the Aussies posted 179-8, with opener David Warner firing six fours and two sixes in his 49 off 32 balls.

The Windies lost skipper Chris Gayle in the second over and by the end of the fourth they had slipped to 26-4. Runako Morton (40) and Denesh Ramdin (44) shared 73 but fell in successive balls as the tourists closed on 141-8.

Warner and Shane Watson (37, 19b) gave the Australians a fine start with an opening stand of 83 in 47 balls, Watson firing four sixes. Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin then had a spell of a four and two sixes in three balls to ensure the Australians of a challenging total.

The crowd were briefly treated to the spectacle of Gayle against explosive fast bowler Shaun Tait, who was immediately up in the mid 90mph region. Sadly it only lasted four balls, Gayle whipping the first of them in cavalier fashion to the square-leg boundary but then seeing his stumps dismantled when attempting a similar shot to a delivery timed at 93mph.

Deonarine edged the next ball to first slip, and after Lendl Simmons sliced Dirk Nannes to third man, Tait claimed his third wicket in his next over when Kieron Pollard edged a fine delivery that moved away.

Ramdin was denied a half century as he holed out to long-off, before Morton fell next ball to give Nannes his third wicket as Steve Smith timed his leap superbly on the boundary and maintained his balance as he took the ball above his head.

Brief scores: Australia 179/ 8 in 20 overs (David Warner 49, Brad Haddin 37 n.o.; Dwayne Smith 2-38, Chris Gayle 2/15) bt West Indies 141/8 in 20 overs (Runako Morton 40, Dinesh Ramdin 44; Dirk Nannes 3/21, Shaun Tait 3/30).

Shell out £21,000 for car key

London, Feb. 21: Those who want to live the James Bond livestyle can now own a high-tech car key, costing little over £21,000. Dubbed the world’s most expensive car key, the recently launched lavish device is implanted inside a watch with a touch sensitive face which will open the door to an Aston Martin car, which ranges between $115,000 and $200,000.

“If indulgent owners press the space between 8 and 9 o’clock the doors of the car will open, and if they press the opposite side they will lock. If you touch both sides together, the car’s lights will flash — to help you find it, or just impress your friends,” Sky News reported.

The gadget developed by Jaeger-LeCoultre — one of the world’s most prestigious luxury watches manufacture in Switzerland — is not quite on a par with James Bond’s watches and their lasers, hooks and saws, but a lot of work has gone into its clever design, it said.

According to the report, the engineers at Swiss firm had to reduce the size of the transponder, which sends the locking signal to the car, and then spent 18 months working out to install the internal mechanics of the watch around it.

The device fits to be one of new instruments to be introduced in the next Bond movie, but interestingly the secret agent can’t have it because of his contract with Omega.

But if you can afford an Aston Martin, then for a mere £21,850 you can own the luxury watch key.

A good time to end stimulus

A good time to end stimulus

The Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, headed by former Reserve Bank governor C. Rangarajan, has sent out a strong indication that the withdrawal of stimulus measures should be undertaken in the Union Budget to be presented later this week. It has upped the GDP growth forecast for 2010-11 to 8.2 per cent, over the 7.2 per cent figure projected by the Central Statistical Organisation. The underlying tenor of the review of the economy by the PM’s advisory council is that unless the government returns to the path of fiscal discipline, there is danger of inflation getting out of control and interest rates hardening. This Budget is the appropriate time for the government to take strong measures to reduce the fiscal deficit by withdrawing the stimulus package on the taxation front. The situation is favourable both economically and politically for withdrawing the stimuluses. The economic recovery is robust, according to the latest figures of the index of industrial production. No doubt electricity and basic goods recorded a slower growth rate, but as the economy picks up and the headline macro figures are strong, these sectors now lagging behind in the pace of growth will automatically get a boost in 2010-11. The government has already been withdrawing on the expenditure side and moving towards reducing the fiscal deficit. Several ministries, such as rural development, chemicals and fertilisers and finance, have not spent the money that was estimated in the previous Budget. For instance, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s Macroeconomic and Monetary Development Third Quarter Review 2009-10, between April to November 2009 the Central government’s capital expenditure was just 45.8 per cent of the budgeted estimate, while its Plan expenditure was a little better, but still less than the budgeted estimate, at 53.4 per cent. The drop in fertiliser subsidy was largely due to the fall in prices in both domestic and international markets. But the decline in fertiliser subsidies helped to offset the 39 per cent increase in food subsidies during April-November 2009. The government’s cutbacks were more on the social side of expenditure. What is disturbing is that the landmark National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme saw a significant amount of money remaining unspent because several state governments failed to initiate schemes under this programme. There is no genuine commitment by states to this programme since jobs are given only when they are asked for, and there is no push from the government’s side. But having said this, it is undeniable that the economic environment is conducive to a withdrawal of the stimulus on the taxation side.

This means excise and other concessions provided in the stimulus package can be discontinued in the coming Budget without disrupting growth. Even exports, which were lagging behind, have now picked up, according to the commerce minister Anand Sharma. Politically too the government is still in its first nine months, and can take heard-headed decisions as the next general election is due more than four years away.

Mahi’s men stump SA in thriller Cricket Match

Mahi’s men stump SA in thriller Cricket Match

Jaipur, Feb. 21: Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s gamble of packing eight batsmen in the side almost misfired for India as they squeezed out a one-run win over South Africa in the first one-dayer at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium here on Sunday. It took a combined effort from all eight of them to put up 298/9 in 50 overs after being sent in by South African skipper Jacques Kallis, and then bowling out the visitors for 297 off the final ball of the match to end a memorable encounter.

Wayne Parnell slammed a 47-ball 49 and Dale Steyn blasted 35 off 19 balls (1x4, 3x6) and the duo’s 65-run partnership for the ninth wicket guided the Proteas to the brink of victory. The scenario had looked unlikely when Kallis departed at 225/8 and the visitors required 74 off the last seven overs.

The Proteas were off to a flyer with openers Loots Bosman (29 off 23 balls) and Herschelle Gibbs (27 off 40 balls) flaying the opening bowlers to all parts. The two were severe on Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, carting him for 17 runs in his opening over. Much against the run of play Bosman dragged on Praveen Kumar to his stumps after putting on 58 for the opening wicket.

Twin strikes by part-time left-arm spinner and man of the match Ravindra Jadeja put the brakes on the South African innings. Gibbs went for a slog sweep only to sky it down to long-off, while AB de Villiers (25, 23b, 4x4) played back to an arm-ball that rattled his stumps.

Kallis was the stand-out performer for the visitors scoring 89 off 97 balls (6x4, 1x6) to follow up his three wickets. But all looked in vain when he was the eighth batsman to depart. With five overs remaining, the visitors needed an unlikely 62 runs to win. Steyn batted the only way he knows, smashing Raina for two big sixes over long-off to garner 14 off the over. There was more to come as Parnell and Steyn collected three boundaries from Sreesanth in the 48th over. In the next over, a six each by the duo brought down the equation to 10 off the last over.

There was a final twist in the tale in the last over bowled by Praveen. Steyn was bowled off the second ball before Langeveldt took three runs to deep fine-leg off the penultimate ball to bring the equation down to four off the final ball. Praveen bowled a wide to add to the drama and then Parnell got a thick edge off the last ball to third man and fell short off the crease going for the second run in a bid to tie the match.

For the Indians, Jadeja had outstanding figures of 10-2-29-2 but Ashish Nehra (67 off 10 overs) and Sreesanth (74 off nine overs) went for plenty. Earlier, six Indian batsmen got in but only Suresh Raina went on to score a fifty — a statistic that tells the tale of the innings. Sachin Tendulkar (4) was the only batsman to miss out after getting needlessly run-out.

The visitors were at the receiving end of Virender Sehwag’s willow as he clattered six fours and two sixes in his 37-ball 46. Sehwag was unlucky to become the second run-out victim of the innings after Charl Langeveldt deflected Karthik’s drive back on to the stumps at the bowling end with Sehwag backing up too far.

The second-wicket stand between Sehwag and Karthik (44) added 79 runs off 12.3 overs. But it was Raina (58, 63b, 6x4, 1x6) who played a crucial role in ensuring that India reached a total of respectability.

Tests, a different ball game

Tests, a different ball game

Batsmen win you one-day internationals but to win Tests, the toughest format of cricket, you need bowlers.

That was evident on an unforgettable evening at the Eden on Thursday, when India clawed their way back into the match like wounded tigers and broke the South African resistance to win the Test, level the series and snatch back the No.1 tag which had been
yanked off their necks after the loss at Nagpur.
That Harbhajan Singh, Amit Mishra and Ishant Sharma consistently delivered an impeccable line to constanly ask the batsmen uncomfortable questions goes to show that you could score runs by the ton, but you still need to bowl the opposition out twice
over to win a Test match. The task is tougher when you are playing a mentally strong team such as South Africa.
The shorter formats of the game are heavily loaded against the bowlers - free hits,
wides et al. The margin of error is too thin. On the contrary, Test cricket provides the bowlers enough time to work the batsmen out. And that, for me, is THE thing.
The Indian bowlers were outstanding. To shut the South Africans out for 296 in their first innings when they were 218 for 1 was indeed remarkable. That lifted the spirits of Dhoni’s men who turned the game on its head, just like a memorable one at the same
venue, against the ‘all-conquering’ Australians back in 2001. Bowlers again. Having played in that match I can tell you... ahem... sorry, words can’t describe that feeling.

(The author is a former India cricketer, national selector and coach of the Hyderabad
team)

Murphy Bed Hardware Kits - A DIY Approach to a Great Guest Room

Murphy Bed Hardware Kits - A DIY Approach to a Great Guest Room

In the early 1900's, a man by the name of William Murphy came up with a new type of bed. The bed, which gets its namesake from its inventor, is called the Murphy bed. Shortly after being patented, the bed became very popular, and soon Mr. Murphy was opening up show rooms all across the United States. So what was it about the Murphy bed that made it so popular? It was the fact that the bed could do a disappearing trick, and retract into a closet, when not needed. This allowed the owner to use the room for things other than just the bedroom.

Today, the Murphy bed has all but disappeared from the American home. This is somewhat of a sad fact, because I think many people, could be well served by using a foldaway bed. This includes people living in small apartments, and also people who might want to have a guest room, but also need to use that room for a different purpose. And if you're a working professional, having a foldaway bed built into the cabinetry of your office, could provide you with a good nights sleep on those days when you have to work late. There are just a couple problems however.

One problem is price. A basic model, meaning just a simple cabinet and folding frame, can set you back around $2000 for the queen-size model. Moreover, you can expect to pay hefty shipping fees along with the base price. And speaking of shipping, that price doesn't include set up and more often than not, doesn't even get the bed to your front door. That means, when the delivery man shows up, you will be responsible for getting it out of the back of the truck.

A second problem is customization. If you don't like the look of any of the available cabinets, well, that's pretty much too bad. Kind of like when Henry Ford said, choose any color you want as long as it's black. In the case of the working professional, not being able to blend the cabinet in with the rest of your furniture, is a complete deal-breaker right there. So if price and customization are the problems, what's the solution? Luckily these days, there are quite a few companies building quality Murphy bed hardware kits.

If you look closely at a Murphy bed, the original ones folded up into a closet. Modern designs, use a freestanding cabinet, which may or may not mount to the wall, and inside contain the hardware that allows the bed to hinge up into the cabinet. So when you buy a hardware kits, it includes the hinges or gas struts (kind of like on the back of a hatch-back car), and incidental things like screws, bolts, and nuts etc. As for the wooden cabinet, that's where sweat equity comes in. In other words, you'll build it. So while it's a little more involved than just ordering one, the possibilities for customization are nearly endless. For example, let's say you have a lot of artwork in a particular room, and so you don't have space for a tall freestanding cabinets. By using a hardware kit, you could build the bed so that it folds up sideways. Other examples of customization include desks and sofas that fold away once the bed comes out.

As far as price goes, these hardware kits are about 1/10 the price and come in a small enough package that shipping shouldn't be more than 20 or $30 and often times, you can find free shipping. Of course you still have to buy the wood, but by providing your own labor, you can keep the price quite low. The bed I built was a little over $600, not including the mattress although you could build it for even less if you use a very simple design.

A Murphy bed hardware kit, can be a great way to make a room more useful. With the bed stowed away, the room can now be used as an office, for exercise, a study, or a place to focus on hobbies and, to top it all off, the bed is out of the way for easy cleaning. Then when guests come over, a simple flip, and toss on some goose down pillows and you're ready to make your guests feel special. And if you're living in a small apartment, a foldaway bed is wonderful for re-creating space that would otherwise be dominated by the bed.

Country French Bedroom Furniture Style is Both Elegant and Nostalgic

Country French Bedroom Furniture Style is Both Elegant and Nostalgic

Introducing the new look of country French bedroom furniture, it certainly seems to be the style du jour, and it's certainly not shabby at all. The characteristics of the French provincial furniture can be summed up in the use of different kinds of solid wood, depending on the region where the wood came from. Juliette's interiors are one of the top baroque furniture and country bedroom furniture suppliers based in the UK. French furniture is opulent, charming, graceful, beautiful, sumptuous and luxurious, but above all, it's timeless. It also presents an era of lighter, more graceful furniture and looks fabulous in any room.

Country French bedroom furniture includes furniture like a French bed, a side table, French bedroom almirah, a cupboard and many more. The most popular French country color combinations are blue and gold and poppy red and gold. Wood veneers polished to high sheen are used instead of the ornate wood carving usually associated with the previous French furniture styles. French country furniture became popular with the hugely popular shabby chic concept where designers and homeowners alike draped sofas with sheets and country style blankets in the beginning.

Warmth, comfort and that rustic feeling of being home are what describe country French bedroom furniture. The design of this beautiful country style furniture is based on a calm and relaxing lifestyle of the lakeside lifestyle. It is usually made by craftsmen and has a sturdy, rugged appearance. It is important that the furniture used in a French country bedroom decoration should be a few pieces which have been wood stained to be completely authentic looking. Look for rustic, sturdy and durable country furniture that is hand crafted as country furniture is rarely machine made. As the internet connects the whole world it makes it so almost every country's furniture item can be purchased easily over the internet. Like all country home decorating styles, country French bedroom furniture is eclectic and celebrates family, relaxation, and fun. Bedroom furniture is one of the most important accents which you need for your home and should consist of a bed, nightstands, cupboards, dressing tables, wardrobes and mirrors.

When you think of romance in the home, there is no better room to bring this to life than in the bedroom through country style furniture. Buying furniture for your bedroom is definitely one of the most exciting things to do; the furniture should be comfortable and well designed in order to decorate a bedroom perfectly. Some bedrooms are also our havens away from the busy world and so it is very important to choose comfortable, attractive bedroom furniture. If you want to add your own style and taste to a home, consider purchasing bare wood furniture. Staining bare wood furniture is relatively easy to do so long as you have properly prepared the wood surface.

If you have purchased some bare wood furniture, then you will need to finish it properly. This includes using the right color of stain according to the type of wood used to make the furniture. Antique furniture brings the old fashioned look into the house, full of love and warmth. Furniture repair is needed every once in a while as the charm of wood is often lost through age and it starts to lose luster. If you are lucky enough to live in a country cottage you will recognize the utter appeal of French cottage style furniture when kept up. Typically made by craftspeople, country styled furniture has a sturdy, dependable look.

Adorn Your Living Space With Stylish Living Room Furniture

Adorn Your Living Space With Stylish Living Room Furniture

One of the most important things to think about when buying new living room furniture is how your family normally uses the room. The living room can be used in many diverse ways by different families. Many view it as their main living space where they eat their meals, relax and watch TV, whilst others regard it as a more formal room to be used for entertaining guests and on special occasions while they use the kitchen as a family space for everyday use. No matter which way you use the space, the living room typically represents the homeowner's individual style and decor choices.

The seating including the sofa in particular, are probably the most essential pieces of furniture for your living room, and so should get the most focus and be given most thought. As a focal piece of home furniture which receives a lot of use, the sofa must provide comfortable and capacious seating as well as being attractive to look at. It is easy to choose a sofa based on looks alone, but do not fall into the trap of buying an uncomfortable piece of furniture just because it looks good. Remember, you will probably be using this sofa for several years, so comfort is very important.

However, comfortable furniture does not have to be boring. As the most prominent item within your home, you can choose to be bold and buy spectacular, remarkable seating that can add a modern and vibrant ambiance to your home. You will find an array of stunning colors and patterns as well as an enormous variety of shapes, sizes and materials, which can give your living space a fashionable perspective. Or should you favor a more traditional style you can also find a selection of straightforward styles and conventional colors to fit your taste.

An essential couch can be a simple yet perfect and even timeless piece of furniture, plus it could be useful for many areas within your home. For the living room, if you long for a look of fashionable elegance, then choose a sofa that features good looks plus elegant modern design. Favorite trendy colors for your modern living space comprise colors including monochrome gray and blacks. Although, should you prefer a more diverse array of shades as compared to the basic black and white you may add accessories with a bright splash of color to provide some personality plus a more relaxed feel and a contemporary look. You can add color or pattern with a few vibrant cushions as well as drapes and blinds to complement the design of your living room furniture.

Rosewood Writing Desks

Rosewood Writing Desks
Rosewood Writing Desks

When you're looking for the perfect writing desk, it can be intimidating just how many options there are out there. Even if you limit it by looking for dark woods, you'll quickly find people recommending cedar, mahogany, or rosewood. Rosewood is the timber that is most often overlooked out of the three, but it is a beautiful dark wood that takes stain very well and is increasingly rare and hard to find.

Rosewood is dark regardless of what specific timber species you go with, although there can be great variation between Brazilian, Australian, Chinese, and Italian rosewood. Danish rosewood is very popular right now, in part because it is closest to some of the old classic rosewood hues that no longer exist to to over logging of certain species of trees.

Once in a while you might hear rosewood desks referred to as redwood desks. While these terms are often interchangeable, and many people find it acceptable to refer to rosewood as redwood, the two are not completely switchable.

Many antique rosewood desks are from Victorian times, and still hold and amazing and beautiful deep color in addition to fine carving and woodwork that made these writing desks some of the most highly sought after in the world at one point.

If you like deep wood colors, take a look at what rosewood might have to offer. In terms of home office desks and other similar furniture, you may find that rosewood has the right unique look to overcome mahogany or cedar as the obvious choice.

Fabric Chair Covers - Add a Beautiful Look

Fabric Chair Covers - Add a Beautiful Look
Fabric Chair Covers - Add a Beautiful Look

Fabric chair covers are becoming a new rage for designers. They can add a beautiful new look to any room or office. The fabric can allow for the original look to be retained and renewed or the fabric can be something new and vibrant. When choosing a cover it is important the look and feel of the cover is natural and well-fitting. There is a special blend that the fabric must take on so that it maintains the structure of the chair it is being used on.

If a cover is ill-fitting it can lead to a multitude of problems such as uneven lines and sagging around the bottom of the chair. Many people take on the resurfacing of chairs by reupholstering the whole thing. This method can get quite expensive. What people do not know is that the same look can be accomplished using fabric chair covers at a fraction of the cost!

An important thing to remember when purchasing chair covers is the functionality of the chair itself. The chair needs to be in good sitting condition overall for the chair cover to work properly. However if your chairs are in need of a facelift and are structurally sound then purchasing a cover is the best way to get a new lease on life for those chairs.

The options for covering a chair are endless. The fabrics, colours and designs are almost unending. Just take a look in one of the extensive catalogs that you can find and you will see that the answers to your design problems are just a simple chair cover purchase away.

Once you have picked out the fabric, texture, colour and design of your cover you can move on to making sure that the covers will fit your budget and more importantly your chair! Fabric chair covers can be tailored to your specific needs and this may cost a bit more but for the right look you should be willing to go this route.

When deciding where to purchase your chair covers there are basically two options: a retailer or an independent shop. The independent shops can cost a little more but the tailored work is custom and you get what you pay for. However, the retailer can provide a beautiful look at a cheaper price and just like purchasing anything else you need to decide what your budget is before diving headfirst into it.

Chairs that have faded over time are in need of a chair cover. These chairs are often times great for sitting but can become an eyesore if left unattended. Rather than purchasing new chairs or getting the older chair reupholstered you can purchase a cover and bring those chairs back to life quickly. Fabric chair covers are now becoming a favourite amongst designers as they have many great qualities:

-- Affordable
-- Beautiful and Elegant
-- Can Be Fitted
-- Can Be Customized To Match Any Scenery
-- Quick (only takes a few minutes)
-- With A Multitude Of Options

Often time's chairs are covered at the same time making an ordinary room look extraordinary. The pricing of doing something like this is a lot less expensive then trying to purchase all new furniture and having it put in place. For a fraction of the cost a whole room can be changed and no moving is necessary. At this point the only choices to make are what kind of covers are you looking for and how do you want them to fit? Custom fitted fabric chair covers are beautiful and can last for years to come.

Which Came First, the Stand Or the TV?

Which Came First, the Stand Or the TV?
Which Came First, the Stand Or the TV?

Can you not just see the absent-minded inventor proudly showing off his work to his wife many, many decades ago? "Honey," he exclaims, "look at what I just invented?" "What is it?" she asks, "It looks like a cupboard sitting on the floor." He replies, "I don't know. I just invented it." Of course, as she turns around to go back to her cooking, she suggests he finds something to do with it, or something close to that. So back to the shop he goes, to invent the TV.

The early TVs came with their own case. Many different styles were designed over the years to fill all the decorating needs of the modern people. These first TVs were large and heavy and required at least two people to move them.

Over time, TVs evolved into smaller and lighter units. Today all you buy is the TV. You can put it on a counter, the floor, an end table, or whatever.

This produced a new trend in manufacturing TV stands. You can find a stand in almost any material and style known to man. Some are made from wood in various colors and finishes. Some are made from plastics in modern styles, old styles, and everything in-between. Some are metal and some feature glass. Whatever style you want, you can find.

These stands have evolved from a unit just large enough to put the TV on to wall-sized units for huge living rooms. Now you can store the TV, the DVD player, the recorder, music players, art displays, books, magazines, and anything else you want on the wall units. Some of these units come in sections, some are stationary, some are on wheels, and some have drawer and some store CDs and VCR tapes.

If you cannot find what you want, you can assemble it. You can build it from lumber or other materials or you can assemble it by putting cubes together.

Life has become easy. No longer do you have to drag rocks or parts of a log into the house for stands. Now you can purchase a variety in an assortment of colors and designs guaranteed to fill any desire.

A TV stand can be a beautiful piece of furniture to look at, a focal point in a room, and a great place to hide away clutter. What kind goes well with the decor you have?

BANGALORE: The world’s leading chipmaker, Intel Technologies, unveiled its futuristic chip which was developed with significant contributions from
its research and development (R&D) centre in Bangalore.

The concept chip, which has 48-cores called ‘single-chip cloud computer,’ has processing power 20 times higher than the ones currently being used. The chip developed over a period of two years saw a team of 40 people across three labs of Intel globally -- Hillsboro, US, Braunschweig, Germany and Bangalore contributing equally to the project.

The Bangalore lab contributed in the areas of circuit and physical design, memory controller logic and the mesh interconnect network. According to Vasantha Erranguntla, senior engineering manager, Intel Labs India, “The single-chip cloud computer was designed as a concept vehicle for parallel software research.”
For now, this concept chip would be largely used for academic and research purposes. Intel’s 48 core chip is also an extension of its earlier research called the teraflop processor which had 80 cores, in which the Bangalore centre had a major part to play.

Intel started its R&D operations in Bangalore in 1998 and it has grown to become one of the largest centre outside US with an estimated headcount in excess of 2,500.

The Bangalore R&D centre has also been part of the various commercial launches of Intel with most notable being the six-core x86 microprocessor called the Xeon 7400 series.

The Xeon 7400 series saw the Bangalore centre executing the end-to-end design activity and also for the first time working on the 45 nm technology.

On the 48 core chip, Intel is expecting the processor to get into commercial production only in the next three to four years. This could be largely used in the area of data centres or conducting very large computing applications.

Though for now, Intel is looking to engage industry and academia next year by sharing 100 or more of these experimental chips for hands-on research in developing new software applications and programming models.

Ms Erranguntla said they were also holding discussions with several research labs and universities in India also to be part of this concept chip.
