BCCI boss gets notice on IPL team

New Delhi, May 7: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the BCCI and its secretary, Mr N. Srinivasan, challenging the change of the rules of the cricket board that allowed the India Cement managing director to become franchise of Chennai Super King team for IPL.

A bench of Justices J.M. Panchal and R.M. Lodha, however, declined to issue an interim order to stay the amended rule 6.2.4 without getting any response from the BCCI and Mr Srinivasan. The notices were issued on a petition by the former BCCI president, Mr A.C. Muthaiah, who alleged that the changes in the rule was mainly brought in 2008 to ensure that Mr Srinivasan could bid for Chennai Super King team.

Prior to this, the rules prohibited board functionaries to have commercial interest in any cricket mach government by the BCCI, Mr Muthaiah’s counsel, Mr Harish Salve said while pressing hard for stay of the rule.

But the SC said till the replies were filed no such order could be passed. Mr Salve described the amended rule as “monstrous” as it gave a licence to the board members to serve their interests. He cited the award of Rs 26 crore ad hoc payment — Rs 13 crores each to Mr Srinivasan’s company and the owners of Jaipur team — by the governing body of IPL as an example as an example of “conflict of interests”.

Mr Muthaiah had moved the SC after his petition was rejected by the Madras HC.
