Lanka series a challenge says Dravid

Lanka series a challenge says Dravid

New Delhi, June 28: India will tour Sri Lanka for their three-Test series next month better prepared top deal with whatever comes their way, said team senior Rahul Dravid at the launch of the 2010 Limca Book of Records here on Monday.

Referring to off-spinner Ajantha Mendis who took 26 wickets when the Indians last toured in 2008, Dravid pointed out, “He played a major role in the series. But hopefully, we have learnt our lesson.”

Mendis repeatedly ran through the Indian batting in his debut series two years ago as Sri Lanka beat India 2-1 in the three-Test encounter.

Dravid however, said since then the Indians had since got the measure of the “mystery spinner”. “He is still a good bowler. He was completely new to us when we toured Sri Lanka last time.

“I think we played him pretty well when he came to India. Having said that, international bowlers keep improving, international bowlers come up with new tricks every time,” he said.

Rahul Dravid — who wants Brazil to win their sixth title — feels the standard of refereeing needed some toning up, and the use of technology would go a long way in eliminating some of the howlers.

Two more IPL seasons for me: Ganguly

Pune, June 28: On Sunday, former West Indies captain and multiple record-holder Brian Lara was tempted out of retirement to play for the MCC against a Pakistan XI at Lord’s. His captain for the day, Saurav Ganguly, too was firm on staying away from the game.

Speaking minutes after the match on late Sunday night, the former India skipper said, “I’m done with India — 100 Tests is good enough! But a couple more seasons of the IPL.

“He (Lara) played in this match after an invitation from John Stephenson, whom he’s known for years. I enjoyed playing with Lara who is one of the all-time greats, and loves playing at Lord’s — he always enjoys matches here,” Ganguly added.

Saina confident of becoming No 1

Saina confident of becoming No 1

After notching up an incredible hat-trick of international titles, ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal on Tuesday said she is confident of becoming the world's number one player soon.
Saina, who rounded a hat-trick of titles by defending her Indonesia Open Super Series trophy in Jakarta, said she would now have to work harder to improve her ranking from number three to one.
"Now it is important for me to work harder and win the next international events rather than concentrating on the ranking. If I can become number three, then I can also become number one," Saina said at a press conference.
"I enjoyed all the matches in the three tournaments. I was a little tired but was confident that I could do it. Finally I am happy that I have won three titles in a row. Now I want to win the upcoming tournaments," she added.
Before winning in Jakarta, which was the 20-year-old's third Super Series title overall, Saina had won the Indian Open Grand Prix at home and the Singapore Open Super Series Tournament.
"Last year it was tough for me to win the Indonesia Open and it was something special as it was my first super series title. But the recent one is special because I have won three tournaments in a row," said Saina.

6 way to save the planet

6 way to save the planet

It’s a journey that began on World Earth Day (April 22) and concludes today, on World Environment Day. The ‘Take Care, Take Charge’ campaign, presented by The Times of India in association with Garnier, invited readers from six cities — Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, and Kolkata to share ideas on how to save the environment. The response was overwhelming — more than 5,000 ideas poured in within just three weeks. In keeping with our promise to recycle 10kg of waste paper for every idea received, the ‘Take Care, Take Charge’ campaign purchased over 50,000kg of waste paper, which has been distributed to NGOs to recycle.

The 5,000-plus ideas were then sorted into six themes — water conservation and pollution, energy generation and conservation, recycling and waste management, transportation and vehicular pollution, heritage and conservation of culture, and biodiversity and greening. Our knowledge partner CEE (Centre for Environment Education) and a panel of experts sifted through the ideas and shortlisted 10 per city. The 10 city finalists then presented their case to a panel consisting of top environmentalists and eminent representatives from various walks of life. Finally, one winner was chosen from each city.

Scientist and innovator Ramachandran Rajkumar was the winner from Chennai while Venky Vadde, an electronics engineer, won from Bangalore. Rajkumar has developed a roof insulation that helps in power conservation and reduction of carbon dioxide emission. Vadde’s idea is to create bicycle rental infrastructure around Bangalore city to remove the last-mile disconnect in public transport.

Delhi’s winner Atul Jain, a businessman from Chandni Chowk, has an idea similar to Vadde’s, though he has been working on it for three years. He plans to set up cycle stands at all major transport hubs as well as residential areas so that people can cycle short distances and be fuel-efficient. Encouragingly, Delhi Metro authorities have already agreed to provide Jain with land at a few Metro stations to carry out a pilot project.

Mumbai’s Rajendra Ladkat, a government contractor in operation and maintenance of air conditioning plants and electrical installation, won for his idea of a ‘Dropping Catcher’ — a locomotive toilet for long-distance trains that avoids discharging mounds of excreta near railway stations and instead disperses it on to the tracks once the train attains a speed of 40km per hour.

Pramit Kumar, a medical college student, won from Kolkata. His idea talks of creating ‘green hand print’ points by planting trees. Hyderabad’s winner, Swaminathan Rajavelu, an electrical engineer by profession, focused on ‘off the grid’ living which comprises switching to natural daylight instead of electric bulbs, using the most efficient ways of cooking, using vegetable food wastes as manure for rooftop gardens, etc.

Saina on track to retain crown

Saina on track to retain crown

hyderabad, June 26: Defending champion Saina Nehwal stormed into the final of the Indonesian Open Super Series on Saturday defeating Japan’s Eriko Hirose 21-9, 21-10 in Jakarta.

It took her 27 minutes to finish on the right side of the result, which gives her a chance to notch up a hat-trick of titles.

Before winning the Singapore Open last week, Saina had won the Indian Open Grand Prix on home turf.

The world number three will now face another Japanese — Sayaka Sato, who ended the superb run of local qualifier Ana Rovita with a 21-19, 21-14 win in the other semifinal.

With the scintillating performance at the on-going Indonesian Open Super Series tournament, Saina is just a step away from defending her 2009 title.

“I am feeling good at the moment,” said Saina, in a press statement released by the Pullela Gopichand Academy, after her semifinal victory.

“The initial rounds were tougher because it took time to adjust to the conditions. I am happy with the way I played and I am looking forward to play well in the finals too,” she said.

“Well, I think the finals is going to be a good match. Though I have played Sayaka Sato (Japan) before and beaten her, she has improved in her game. So I am looking forward to it,” said Saina.

Even after continuous tournaments, Saina is charged to achieve her goal. “Physically, I was little tired in the initial rounds but now I seem to be feeling better. Mentally, I am motivated and aiming for a victory tomorrow,” she added.

About the pressure with the new milestone — being World No.3, she said, “I am playing well right now. Currently I am not thinking about my ranking. I am concentrating on my practice and game.

Phelps gives a good start in Paris Open

Phelps gives a good start in Paris Open

Paris: Michael Phelps qualified for the finals of both his events on the first day of the Paris Open.
Phelps posted the quickest time of 1 minute 57.88 seconds in the 200 metres butterfly heats before reaching the 100 freestyle final with the seventh best time of 49.44 seconds.
The Olympic champion Alain Bernard of France failed to qualify, finishing 18th in the 100 freestyle heats with a time of 50.44. The finals will take place later on Saturday. Phelps will also swim the 200 metres freestyle and the 200 metres individual medley on Sunday.
The American is competing in Paris as part of his preparations for the American trials, which will determine the roster for August's pan pacific championships in Irvine, California.
Bernard, swimming in the same heat as Phelps, was unable to accelerate in the last 50 metres. The Frenchman, who is gearing up for August's European Championships in Budapest, Hungary, said he was not worried by his disappointing performance. "I was very tired, and when you're tired, there is nothing you can do. I wasn't in a good shape today, and it's also the result of my training for the european championships. This meeting was not a milestone in my preparations," Bernard said.
Looking to gain some more racing experience before the pan-Pacific Championships, American Nathan Adrian qualified for the 100 freestyle final with the third best time of 49.17 seconds.
World champion Cesar Cielo of Brazil, who won the 50-meter butterfly heats in 23.87, will also feature in the 100 free final after qualifying in a time of 49.31.

Rahul Yuvraj back in Test squad

Rahul Yuvraj back in Test squad

Chennai, June 26: Yuvraj Singh is back in the Indian Test squad for the away series against Sri Lanka next month, barely three weeks after national selectors dropped him from the One-Day side for the Asia Cup on fitness grounds.

To accommodate Yuvraj, the axe fell on Subramaniam Badrinath, who played two Tests against South Africa in February.

The selection committee, chaired by Krishnamachari Srikkanth, which met here with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has thrown another lifeline at Yuvraj.

Also, returning to the squad is Rahul Dravid who missed the South Africa series after being injured in the Bangladesh series.

Harbhajan Singh, Pragyan Ojha and Amit Mishra will be more than adequate in the spin department while Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma and Sreesanth will handle the pace.

Wriddhiman Saha has been retained as the second wicket-keeper. Suresh Raina is the only player not have played a Test in the squad. — IANS

The squad: M.S. Dhoni (captain, wk), Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma, Sreesanth, Suresh Raina, Pragyan Ojha, Murali Vijay, Wriddhiman Saha (wicket-keeper).

Fifa accepts flaw in Jabulani

Fifa accepts flaw in Jabulani

Johannesburg, June 26: Fifa has finally acknowledged that there may be something wrong with the Jabulani World Cup ball, but won’t act on the problem until after the tournament.

Many players have likened the Jabulani to a “supermarket ball,” saying it is too unpredictable and flies through the air too easily.

“We’re not deaf,” Fifa secretary general, Mr Jerome Valcke said on Saturday at a news conference. “Fifa is not unreceptive about what has been said about the ball.”

Mr Valcke said that Fifa will discuss the matter with coaches and teams after the World Cup, then meet with manufacturer Adidas.

”There are rules for size and weight... But the ball has to be perfect,” he added.

”There are rules for size and weight... But the ball has to be perfect,” he added.

Goalkeepers have complained about the ball at every recent World Cup, although this time forwards and even coaches have added their laments.

Brazil manager Dunga got into a verbal spat with Valcke over the Jabulani before the tournament, challenging the Fifa executive to come out on to the pitch and attempt controlling it. Denmark defender Daniel Agger said the ball made some outfielders look like “drunken sailors.”

The Jabulani could create even more problems in the knockout phase, since games could be decided by penalty shootouts. Adidas has made World Cup ball since 1970 and is contracted through 2014.
