Nightmare on Elm Street Movie review

Nightmare on Elm Street Movie review

Cast: Rooney Mara, Jackie Earle Haley, Kyle Gallner
Direction: Samuel Bayer
Genre: Horror/ Slasher

A college going group of friends are stalked and killed by a man (Freddy) who has a burnt disfigured face and knives as fingers only in their dreams! What seems surreal in the beginning seems like an ugly truth later on as one by one Freddy begins his killing spree. The youngsters can only survive provided they don’t sleep!

A remake of the old horror film by the same name, Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) pretty much has all the ingredients intact, needed in the making of a decent horror film. Samuel Bayer manages to grip you with fear every time Freddy appears on screen as he speaks in a frightening voice and then scratches his metallic knife-fingers into walls and then his human victims. The sound effects, dark picturisation and mystery involved too keep you on the edge of your seat.

However the film somewhere seems formulaic in its treatment after a while and there is where lies its fault. The killings become predictable after a while and the suspense quotient keeps dropping as the film progresses.

I know what you did last summer, The Ring are way better films in this genre, although Nightmare on Elm Street is not an unintentional horror comedy like The Final Destination either.

If you swear by horror slasher films and don’t mind seeing another conventional film of the genre, this one’s a decent one time watch.

Robin Hood Movie Review

Robin Hood Movie Review

Cast: Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Mark Strong, Oscar Isaac
Direction: Ridley Scott
Genre: Action/ Adventure
India release date: 11th June 2010

ts natural to feel slightly disappointed when films that intend to reprise a historic figure, just touch upon the display of his heroism and elaborate a different aspect of his life altogether. Different and new as it may seem, the story of an ordinary man who is yet to put a full fledged display of his extra-ordinary archery skills somewhere lacks that punch needed in a historic epic.

I do not doubt the creativity of Ridley Scott or his story telling skills but it’s the story itself (by Brian Helgeland) that lacks what it takes to make a ‘Robin Hood’ movie. Had it been just another film, the story wouldn’t seem flawed.

With ample scope to a sequel, Scott’s Robin Hood is a back-story of the ordinary archer Robin Longstride (Russell Crowe) before he went on to become the iconic legend and outlaw, Robin (of the Hood). In simple words, the film ends where you want it to begin but it’s not all that bad, thanks to a brilliant cinematography and superb background score.

It goes like this. Robin Longstride is an archer in the army of King Richard the Lionheart (Danny Huston), who bankrupted England with his Crusades. On his way back to his country, Richard and his army ransack French castles. In one of these expeditions, Richard gets killed. Robin decides to deliver the crown of his dead king to the king’s mother in London. En route, he stumbles across a dying Robin of Loxley, who asks Robin to return his sword to his father in Nottingham. Once in Nottingham, Robin Loxley’s father requests Robin to impersonate his son in order save his land. Loxley's feisty widow, Lady Marion (Cate Blanchett) who seems displeased with the plan, later on starts falling for Robin’s impressive character and qualities. Together the two although have many battles to fight.

In London, with King Richard dead, his spoilt brother John (Oscar Isaac) becomes the king who is a wicked yet foolish monarch who fails to identify his true enemy. Will John be able to salvage the British empire?

As said before, there is nothing wrong with giving a different story of what happened before Robin became Robin Hood but the film in its first half goes haywire as it opens up various sub plots. The happenings fail to grip you. The build up towards the climax is extremely slow and the film only picks up in its second half when Robin reaches Nottingham.

Russell Crowe, one of the most brilliant actors, shockingly seems like he is least interested in playing a Robin Hood. He keeps mouthing something throughout which gets inspirational only towards the climax.

Cate Blanchett as Marion is stunning and superb. She infuses that fire needed for a movie of this subject. Oscar Isaac offers the comic relief. The actor makes King John quite an intriguing figure with his performance.

The Descent Part 2 Movie Review

The Descent Part 2 Movie Review

Cast: Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza
Direction: Jon Harris
Genre: Horror
India Release Date: 2nd July 2010

A horror film is successful when it manages to scare you. If this job is done, all possible loopholes in the film start looking insignificant... especially the story progression in a sequel.

Jon Harris’ ‘The Descent Part 2’ takes the gruesome story of few women’s encounter with bloodthirsty predators in a dark cave and their fight for survival as shown in ‘The Descent (2005)’ a notch ahead as he manages to let fear grip you in spite of not offering anything new in terms of the story.

It all begins with Juno (Natalie Mendoza) taking her girlfriends on a cave expedition. What seems like a fun trip in the beginning soon turns into an event of bloodbath as one by one the girls get slashed by inhuman creatures. Where the rest die, only Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) manages to survive and get out of those dark dreadful caves.

Days later, a local sheriff forces Sarah to go back into those caves with a rescue team after he suspects Sarah to be the murderer of her friends. Do the creatures exist for real or are these things a figment of Sarah’s disturbed imaginations?

The film drags to a certain extent in the beginning but grips you as it progresses. The dark cave interiors are shot superbly which play a major role in infusing fear into your minds. Only torch and helmet lights are used to showcase the interiors of the cave. The sound effects add intensity to the film.

The fear that grips each character of the film, the effect it has on them, their struggle for survival sends chills down your spine.

If you are faint hearted, this film is definitely not for you. If you love blood and gore, horror in general as a genre, this one’s worth watching.

GoM divided over caste census

GoM divided over caste census

NEW DELHI: Divided over whether caste should be included in census, a Group of Ministers (GoM) today failed to reach a conclusion on the politically-sensitive issue and decided that the government would seek views of political parties on the matter.

The parties will be asked to respond within four weeks, the GoM, headed by finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, decided.

The ministerial body discussed the controversial issue in detail for about 90 minutes, deliberating on pros and cons of including caste in census, sources said.

Some members of the GoM favoured inclusion of caste while others were opposed, contending that it could harm the social fabric of the country, they said.

"The Group of Ministers discussed threadbare issues before it and decided to meet again... We will meet soon," HRD Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters after the meeting.

Government had last month decided to set up the GoM on the controversial issue after consensus eluded at two meetings of the Union Cabinet.

Parties like SP, RJD and JD(U) are strongly in favour of including caste in census and disrupted proceedings of Parliament in the last Budget Session by pressing their demands.

They are likely to raise the issue during Monsoon Session of Parliament expected to commence in the third week of this month.

There are divisions even within Congress over the issue. Caste census was last conducted in the country in 1931. Besides Mukherjee, the GoM includes home minister P Chidambaram, law minister M Veerappa Moily, HRD minister Kapil Sibal, renewable energy minister Farooq Abdullah, agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee and Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran.

Of them, Moily, who has been the most vocal supporter of including caste in census, left soon after the meeting began.

Abdullah, Pawar and Banerjee also did not attend meeting.

The issue of inclusion of caste in census has triggered a debate with a section opposing it saying that it would divide the society on caste lines while others advocate that it would ensure fairer distribution of resources to the backward and downtrodden sections of the society.

Reports had it that Chidambaram had suggested that the caste-based census should be included in the second phase of the ongoing census exercise and clubbed with the biometric card data to ease the logistical constraints.
